In “Paul,” a spaceship crashes down in a desert in the 1950s and a little girl rescues the vessel’s sole inhabitant. He is carried away to a military research facility and there he remains throughout the decades that follow, until one fateful evening he escapes in a sedan and starts racing across the desert. His plan to secure freedom is almost foiled when he passes a slow-moving RV and fails to correct in time to return to his lane. The car he is driving flies off the road, flips into the air and finally lands on the ground in an upside-down mess.
